Wheezing

Wheezing is a high-pitched or whistling sound when breathing, often noticed when breathing out.
It can be unsettling, particularly if it is new or worsening.

What Wheezing Can Mean

Wheezing usually indicates narrowing or irritation of the airways.

Common causes include:

  • Asthma or airway sensitivity

  • Respiratory infections

  • Allergic reactions

Other causes that may need assessment include:

  • Chronic lung conditions

  • Inflammation of the airways

  • Less commonly, obstruction within the airway

The timing, triggers, and associated symptoms are important in understanding the cause.

When to Take Wheezing Seriously

You should seek urgent medical attention if you have:

  • Severe or worsening breathing difficulty

  • Wheezing with chest tightness or pain

  • Difficulty speaking in full sentences

  • Blue lips or signs of low oxygen

If wheezing is persistent, recurrent, or unexplained, it should be assessed.

Why See a General Physician?

Wheezing is not always caused by a single condition.

A general physician considers the lungs, allergies, infections, and overall health together to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

This is particularly important when symptoms are ongoing or not clearly diagnosed.

How We Assess Wheezing

A structured assessment typically includes:

  • A detailed discussion of your symptoms and triggers

  • Review of your medical history

  • Physical examination

  • Targeted investigations where appropriate

This helps identify the cause while avoiding unnecessary tests.
